Using simple mechanical hinges and pistons, this inventive staircase easily folds flush up against a wall to expand a lower space and/or to restrict access to an upper floor. The mechanics within the design allow any person to easily open or close the staircase from upstairs or downstairs. Inner pistons help slide the stairs back up swiftly to create a flush wall. The pistons also act as a gradient to lower each step individually after the stairs have been pulled out, creating a gradual, elegant wave-like pattern as the steps individually lock into place.
“The younger Raible, who was a partner in 3 Square Design, a furniture manufacturing company, and the Brooklyn shop Refinery, said that his work, like the Lounge Chair ($3,000), left, is “more square” than his father’s but that it has subtle details like beveled armrests that reveal the end grain. Since they started working together, he said, his father’s furniture is “getting cleaner” and his is “getting funkier.”
when i first saw this chair, i was reminded of an exhibition I saw at the Rose Museum of a series of cubes that had been through all sorts of processes to age, beat up, or otherwise give them a 'history'.
i can't remember or find the sculptress's name and it's been bugging me since
like squapple, i also thought about the effects of sitting in this chair, especially at low temperatures. ouch. but it is visually interesting
nice one chris.. i'll be starting on building my apartment in a friends attic soon.. so dual purpose furniture is a plus. and i can duplicate/build this... thanks

i like my living space to work for me, not me to work for it, so to speak. high-maintenance keeps me out of the studio.

Lovely!
The word Tagei means versatility in Japanese, and what better way to describe this fabulous line of plyboo furniture that converts from table into bench? Brooklyn designer Akemi Tanaka caught our eye last year when she debuted her clever Futaba unfolding couch/table. Now Akemi’s got a new addition to the eco-friendly, transforming-furniture family, and we think its as cute and clever as its big sister Futaba.
