“Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.
Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.
“Using information design principles and graphical techniques, the 85+ recorded covers of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is mapped in relation to the original recordings by the band. Although available information was limited, the graph is data rich in representing time since original recording, recording artist, release name/date and label. Various graphical techniques employed (eg. radiating dots) allowed for data to be accessed (number of recordings per year) while also creating an interesting aesthetic presentation. The print on off-white heavy-weight art paper is a nod to the original graphic material produced for Joy Division by Peter Saville.
“edward hann's "Internally displaced people 06" is an exploration in the theory of ‘designing for an ethical message’, using the uniformity and order of the grid, mixed with the natural topographical beauty of a landscape, to demonstrate the scale of humanitarian crisis in Western Darfur and Eastern Chad. Each print was screen printed by K2 Screen, on 240gsm GF Smith, Black Plike paper and is scaled at 720 by 1020mm.
In 2008, half of the world's population will be in urban areas. The shift from rural to urban changes a balance that has lasted for millennia. Within one generation, five billion people, or 60% of humanity, will live in cities. The urban population of Africa and Asia is set to double in this time.
Interesting. Reminds me of something else Ive seen. It was related to the fuel consumption thread as well. Each flags colour represented usage or something. Couldnt find it though :awkward:

might it have been that they worked out the ratio of colours on each flag, and utilised them for various 'clever' visuals of certain things. basically, stuff like the american flag, and they just added a legend to it stating something like -
United States Red: In favor of the war in Iraq White: Against the war in Iraq Blue: Don't know where Iraq is
This is thinking outside the ‘box’. Reebok’s new packaging for their mountain climbing shoes reflects their purpose by sticking it to the box lid. The packaging is carried out by McCann Erickson India.
