Because the internet was built on links. And now, these publications are so insecure that they are afraid you might click on something and leave their site. So, all the links are internal...if they even have links.
It's polite. If you are going to write about somebody and especially if you are selling ads or something on your site, you owe it to them to link directly to them. Aren't they helping sell your shit, too? I won't read online things that don't link back...
