Seems a bit strange. I've got some .avi files which play perfectly on the iMac.

But when I transfer them to my flash drive and use the USB connection on my DVD player with the big screen tv, the video and audio are seriously out of synch, by as much as five or more seconds. Quite disconcerting.

Any ideas on correcting this so I can watch those files through my player's usb connection?

Sounds like a problem with the DVD player.. Maybe try converting to some other format?
Sorry, I don't think I was too much help.

    hi,
but I also had the same problems.
The correct way to do it is to re-encode the whole thing using something like D-Vision 3.
And then I accidently discovered that the pressing either the fast search or slow search button on the dvd player the problematic synch problem readjusts itself.
Crazy I know but some tech guy tried to explain to me why this happens something to do with image & audio transfer rates and obviously I clean forgot what was said as I would tell you here.

So if it's a major issue then re-encode, but if it's just something you wish to watch then try the fast search and slow search.

I changed to an MPEG format and it seemed to work fine.

However, as Black Window has suggested, that fast forward button does seem to have a serious effect on synching. Even simply stopping might create some difficulties, too.

I remember doing that on another earlier DVD player, and created a similar problem. I think that was using a basic DVD, although I can't remember for sure. I was able to correct it, as you said, by stopping, waiting a moment, using the reverse slow search, and then restarting. Too bad I can't remember more detail.

And as I tried out the MPEG format, the beginning of the file was in perfect synch; I fast forwarded and ended up about a second out of synch. I'll do some more experimenting, as I do have some things that play perfectly using VLC on my monitor, but I'd prefer the comfort of my couch and wide screen tv.

Okay, I experimented and watched a couple of shows. Both in MPEG format. Each began in synch, but by the end of an hour, both were out by more than ten seconds.

Pausing, fast forwarding, fast reverse, and then play had no effect - still out of synch.

Now I'll have to go back to the .avi format and experiment using the pause, forward and reverse on that.

Might work fine if I burned .avi onto a DVD, using Toast to get maybe six hours worth on each DVD. Another experiment, if I go that route.

Might be worth picking up a WDTV box. We've got one here, and it works pretty well - plug in a flash drive or a USB hard drive with movie files on it, they play pretty easily. No need to convert, and it handles a ton of different formats.

It could be faster to load, but I hear the the new model (that just came out) does that better.

Ooh, ethernet port. That sounds sweet - it's a shame we don't have ethernet running through the TV room.

A couple of experiments, both failures to make any changes. Synching problem begins a few minutes into the programme, and by the time an hour is up, out of synch by more than ten seconds.

Used Toast and a DVD-RW (yes, I know that in itself can cause some difficulties, but bear with me) and put five .avi files onto the one DVD, with a menu. Same problem.

Trying to bypass the USB connection, put five of the .avi files directly onto the disc as data. Played fine, as the player does handle that format, but although beginning in synch, slowly became semi-intellligible over the hour, and ended up near enough to fifteen seconds out of synch.

Using the same DVD-RW so that at least I'm not making coasters, I'm currently using VisualHub to create a single DVD of the single programme.

Will report later on any progress.

Does your dvd player have a firmware update option maybe it can be updated?

Tried the single programme of the series on a DVD. Shortly into it, the synch shifted again. So that didn't work.

I'm beginning to think that maybe it's just something about the way I originally ripped the DVDs into .avi format. Can't recall it happening on other series.

It's a new DVD player, so I doubt if there's any update options on it at all. Nothing that I noticed in the manual, anyway.

Just a curious problem now, that I'd like to find a resolution to, even just an explanation :-)

Our Samsung TV has a USB port on the back, for firmware updates. You might be able to burn firmware updates to a blank CD or DVD to update your player.

    What's the manufacturer/model? I'll see what I can find. :)

Maybe the Flash Drive is ferked?

Tried Disc Utility to Repair, all okay.

Erased (MS-DOS FAT) and basically tried to rebuild it so it would work as before.

Could not record any .avi file to it at all: The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “wwwkkkyyymy program.avi” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)

For testing purposes, put a few MP3s and a few jpegs on it. Then tried the .avi again. Wouldn't take the .avi but the others seemed okay.

But when I put it into the USB slot of the DVD player, I got "Empty Device."

Maybe my lil' ol' flash drive is ferked? Kingston DataTraveler 2 GB

And something else that I'd recorded from downloaded .avi files to standard DVD using Toast on a disc with several episodes played without a problem this evening.

Haha, searching for "Soken M-311A firmware" on Google brings up this thread as the first hit.

Everything else is in a foreign language, hmm.

Unless your DVD player goes by another model number, I don't see anything - maybe you'll have better luck, though. Possibly another brand? In the 1990's, Apple sold the same Macs under the names Centris, Quadra, LC, Performa...

That foreign language is Thai. And I can't read it, either.

But as the player is really new, off the shelf, even if it is an older model, I doubt if it needs an update.

I tried with another avi file last night, burned onto the DVD-RW, and it seemed to be in synch. I'm beginning to suspect the initial files, or my flash drive. Although, those files did show up okay the first time I played them, and do on the computer. And it seems I might have ferked the flash, so if I replace that, I can try again.

jeez.. why use a usb plug in on a dvd player? just transform the .avi to dvd using toast, or virtual hub, burn it and play it..

Did that last night on the DVD-RW and it worked well. Sometimes just easier to transfer to the flash drive and play from there. VisualHub did it fast and well.

Now I'm just curious as to why my flash isn't working any more.
