Sorry that I disappeared; life's like that sometimes.

First, my heartfelt thanks to all the letter illustrators. That's some awesome, charming, funny, beautiful, sweet work you people did.

Some people did more than 1 letter, a few did three. Exciting to have that much creative energy with consistent quality, too!

A special hug to be-jot who really did some heavy lifting. He did 5 letters altogether, with 2 of them being back-ups. His attitude was most worthy. He said (I am paraphrasing, here) "I don't care if they get used or not; I care about the little girl and moving this project for her forward".

I have to give a shootout to Chuklz (aka mr. lafemi). Many people helped me get the list of words together. Chuck really bore down and majorly helped me refine and define that list of gamer's terms and lingo. He also schooled me on the history of the joystick . The project would have stalled for much longer at the beginning if not for his kind attention.

nimmot and nick were my sounding boards when this first got going. each of their unique perspective informed mine as I tried to get my head around what was needed for the little book.

And.. the meskadon. meska's work on that sweet little cover was truly a thing of beauty. when i saw his working model, my first thought was "oh shit, i HAVE to learn how to mask", my second thought was.. "that's labour-intensive, wow!" taking all those separate elements and combining them into a good book cover was a heroic thing. :)

By default, mesk turned into the layout king when my HD died. i don't even recall asking him; he just did it. I am especially grateful that he was there to make the last-minute decisions that always crop up in any project. the whole thing would have stalled way farther past the deadline without his talent, skill, and attention.

I do want to thank those of you who signed up, but just couldn't get there. Yeah, it was sad that you couldn't, but you cared enough to sign up, you moved the project forward (we nearly stalled during the sign-up phase), and if there was a scramble later, at least there WAS a later.

Finally, I want to thank Biff for putting up with the whole thing. He knows that people show they care in a lot of different ways; some of those ways are a lot more hassle for him than others..

    I love you all. :)

    Now... pimping the book.

Whatever you need to do, do it. :D

I've been talking with a pal of Biff's that runs a game-focused website. A list of larger and smaller sites to spam with info on A Gamer's Alphabet is in place, and I spent the weekend trying to figure out a way to advertise/solicit/promote to them.

We're going to use the dedication text from the little book, and I've made a graphic to attach to the solicitation.

I do NOT want to be teased about the graf, ok? I asked a few people for help; no one responded. This isn't something I know much about how to do, but I tried and I got something to use. :p I encourage anyone to make a replacement; I'd use something else happily.

Please don't enlarge it; the mistakes show too well.

Choose your flavour: jpg or png.

    Nice work Mick! :)

Just to reiterate, try and do what you can to promote the book and cause. We all have other interests on the web, and i'm sure portals like Behance, Etsy and similar will be good places to announce it. I will also look at magazines, periodicals and similar.

Just mentioning the book the other day in a studio full of creatives, drove interest primarily at marissasbunny.com. One person had experience of IS, another knew of someone who had experienced similar. It's all awareness. Sales increase would be a benefit, Biff and Mrs Biff would benefit from any pennies that come their way. Life's shit, but we can all help to make it better be it small or large.

    :) wonderful!

I've been informed that I'm getting one as a gift. I puddled up.

    ...........

Biff's pal Hawty McBloggy put the book in her Holiday Gift Guide. That graf I made doesn't look too bad in context.

    http://hawtymcbloggy.com/2009/11/25/beyond-the-pages-of-a-book/

I put it in Adam Engst's Holiday Gift Guide in the "Games" category

    http://emperor.tidbits.com/webx?7@@.3cf58059/1

I've emailed (these are people who have hosted Fairfax in the past) a few of the larger game sites.

    Penny Arcade (the Childsplay charity)
    halo.bungie.org
    Rooster Teeth
    Ctrl+Alt+Del

:) I'm mentioning this so we don't repeat each other's efforts.

not getting much joy as far as "advertising".

a lot of emails sent to forums large and small, with almost no replies. something i hadn't considered (being pretty much out of the loop when it comes to xmas holiday patterns) is that these sites are probably being flooded with "gift ideas", and a fundraising appeal might not seem so appealing. ... or at least i haven't found a good way to make it appealing yet.

good thing it's not a holiday book; A Gamer's Alphabet is good all year-round, yes?

    Raising awareness FTW.

I was surprised that Kotaku said the book was for children, instead of in the style of a children's alphabet book, but it is family friendly. ;) I still say that Skyler handled "teabagging" with grace and class.

    hmmm

i was thinking someone else might be champing at the bit.....

we'd need more terms for some of the letters. E, I, O, Q, Y, J, U, V, X, Z spring to mind. it was hard coming up with at least 2 choices for several of those.

;) at least people would know what they were getting into this time.

we could do numbers as a companion. guess it wouldn't ave much to do with gaming. but it could just be a fazyluckers skillzzz competition. Or we could do a old linear PST type thing like the good 'ol days. if that hasn't been played out.
I do kinda like an idea liek we did with that calendar and this book. eveyron ejsut gets a # and go from there design, photograph, 3d model, smash to your hearts content.

hmmmm, a video/animation montage thing would be cool to.

wormy, we've got 2 other collabs going now. the mixtape and base's big circle(s).

i really was thinking of Volume 2 of A Gamer's Alphabet. the other things are fun, but the added purpose of bunny support and IS awareness really made the little book feel worthwhile.

chris, what did you mean by "widened slightly"? i'm intrigued.

(yes, knackered... but get 'em while they're weak is my motto.)

I totally forgot about the circle. I'll have to look into that.
My availability might be sketchy from Jan-??? late spring maybe. my work/life seems to be on a need to know basis and apparently I don't need to know (even though I'm sure I do)

    time for another discussion. :)

if we start discussing it soon, there may be something to work on in a few months. who knows?

i've thought of a couple of different approaches. i hope others have, as well.

there was this idea, as i recall, to do one/two page spread with a short story/poem/written word and the next - painting/picture/graphic/photo/whatever - visual representation of that previous written passage.
pictures inspired by words (i know, sounds banal and trivial :)
or other way around, for that matter - might work either way.

to push the envelope a little bit - make it so that no matter from where you start: the begining or the end of the book and start flipping through the pages, you get something inspired/coming out of a previous thing, like a picture/word loop.
    somehow.

ie. in the middle there's marissa/fairfax and whichever way you go - left or right - there are words and pictures connected with her/him.
so no matter where you start - you always have marissa right in the center - which for me works as a nice, albeit simple, idea of our work revolving around the main theme, of her being the focus point...

just a thought, might be expanded, simplified, worked to something completely different... i just want to write something for her...
