ok what the heck is going on here.
All I've done in the past and all I've had to do is just transers on a local network, easy as pie. thank god.
now I'm in a position where I have to do transfers outside of my network, mainly from the office to home.
    I'm using OS 10.4.11
I had a router, but I updated the firmware and now it doesn't work... but thats another topic, so I just unhooked it, it was getting old anways.
Everything I've read for support on the apple site says turn on FTP sharing and your good to go, just give the other guy your IP address.
Well that doesn't seem to work.
My IP seems pretty generic, something you'd see within a network.
I just googled "whats my ip" is that what I should be sending out?
I want my router back I'm feeling naked here.

yes, "what's my ip" ip. but if your local ip differs to that, then you will need to forward ports on whatever is between your network and the internets.

Yup, what chris says. And, I know it's on here somewhere but I can't find it, you'll find this link useful:

Well known" TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products

If you do this a lot and you have a dynamic IP from your ISP you might want to look to Dynamic DNS

hmm, its still not working. I'm not sure what kind of 'stuff' the computer at work might be behind, should that matter? I figure it might be hard for me to connect to him but I should be pretty open.
this is my current IP can someone connect to me?
    209.148.182.129
I have a drop box with a picture in it and thats it.
anyone who connects should only have access to that one shared folder correct? Can they drop things in and pick them up?
nothing with apple support was very clear on this and sitting at home its hard to test by myself.

this is so annoying I'm positive this can be done, I'm just don't know why its being so difficult.

ok I just forwarded all of the ports that I saw in the sharing preferences that had to do with file sharing, and ftp. didn't do windows sharing yet, though I don't think I'll need to. am I missing anything? any documentation on my modem/router is extremely limited. its not even on the manufacturers list. I got it through Rogers communications when I got my internet through them. its SMC model 3100. blah.

is it possible the problem is on the other end? as a guest, i could upload but not see the contents (naturally).

all i did was connect to the IP you gave.

hmm well at least that worked. I wonder what the problem is at the office.
is there a way I could get someone to see the contents as well? I'd like to send stuff to the office through this as much as I'd like to receive stuff.

oh, mick, did you just use 'connect to server' under the 'go' menu? and type the ip in there? jsut to be clear so when I talk to my coworker I can be sure he's doing the same thing.

    yes, that's all i did.

and if i hadn't been a guest, and had a name/password, i assume i could have seen/manipulated the contents of the dropbox folder.

:) i'm glad we share a taste for that kind of pron. you kinky dog, you.

When they put in the IP address, they need to format it like this:

    ftp://209.148.182.129

If they don't include the ftp://, it'll assume that it's AFP and fill afp:// in automatically.

Alternatively, Transmit is a much, much better FTP client than the Finder.

sooo, what , exactly, was better than a heavily madeup woman upside down in the bathtub, using a clear plastic speculum to facilitate pouring PopRocks™ into her vagina? i feel one-upped. ;)

    wormy, more information is needed.

we're blind to what is happening on your co-worker's end. if he's behind a firewall, then yes, that could well be a problem.

    .....

have you heard of Dropbox™? it's free (2 gig limit, i think), easy, and works a treat.

    Get Dropbox™
