Hey, if you can afford it, more power to you.

Most people, however, cannot afford it, but were able to get a loan anyway. That's why things are fucked.

In the UK it's very different. Architects design a garage as a storage space, certainly not to park a car in. Most people have to point their car at the garage then push it in and leave the door up, because they are also designed too shallow to fit the length of a car.

    Garages too small for cars

More homeowners are being forced to leave their cars in the street because they are now too big to fit in their garages, according to garage experts.

The Association of Garage Door Specialists (AGDS) says that the size of the average garage is still designed according to measurements from the 1930s when cars were significantly narrower.

The average size of a garage door comes in at seven foot with developers building garages only a little wider than the door to leave drivers very little room to park their cars.

With many people also using garage space for storage, even fitting in a small car can be a tight squeeze. But with four-wheel drives, MPVs and SUVs becoming increasingly popular then many have no choice but to leave them on the street.

This puts them at greater risk of vandalism and theft and car owners consequently see a rise in their car insurance premiums.

Derek Hibbart, a spokesman for the AGDS, said: "Car design has changed dramatically and much larger vehicles, such as four-wheel drives, have become very popular."

"People are bigger too, so it's no surprise that getting in and out of a vehicle in the confines of a garage can be almost impossible."

A few developers working in the top end of the market are now increasing the size of garages and fitting doors that are eight foot wide but the extra space comes with a bigger price tag.

Hibbart added: "The rest of us risk expensive damage to paintwork and even injury by squeezing out of vehicles into an ever decreasing space."

those large garages are for making apartments for your teenagers, or for band practice, or for moving your startup back into. :)

they're just big, poorly insulated rooms with a concrete floor.

it was the priority balance which irked me

barely space for 1 person to standup in the "bath"room with no windows, 3 tiny slot windows in the main living space which doubles as kitchen and circulation space compared with 3 car parking spaces with 2 skylights in the garage

fumes will definitely get you drunk (and you'll have a hangover if you survive, so it's not all that great).

Who leaves their car running in a garage?
I'm wondering about the Kitchen, and having to watch TV right next to the garbage, and no oven, guess the takeaways must be great in the area!

Are you kidding me? I park my motorcycle in my living room. :D

Also, there are always doors from the house to the garage here in Florida, some people even convert their garages to rooms or studios and aircon them :)

I actually like the layout of that house, minus the non door to garage.

i quite like the idea of a 3 car-sized garage (but would also like at least another 2 rooms (and an upstairs), and that door to the garage sounds good, too).
