Its here where I work. Two out of our 4 man department are going :awkward: 43 people from the Liverpool sites.

We are working our temporary 30 days notice now. To finish on the 4th of December. Great timing as usual with these type of things :depressed:

Hopefully I'll have a job this christmas!
  1.
    fingers crossed matey X

my wife and i both had redundancy reviews at our respective offices this month - dicey stuff as we have a house purchase underway - fortunately we have a 9 and 12 month reprieve (when the dates have been set for the next review)

well, record cut in interest rates should stir something up. i guess as long as the tabloids quieten down all the doom and gloom stories for a while.

If worst comes to worst we'll all chip in for air tickets to China...
They say they're not going to have a recession!

Certainly architects but I'm not sure about their design market!

    :)
  4.
a friend of mine just shipped off to china to avoid the crunch - he's hopelessly underqualified/inexperienced for the job they've given him but he figures by the time they figure that out he can come back to europe into a job

oh squapple... crap. i assume that part of the time you spend on the job in the next 30 days will be taken up by polishing your portfolio. :) that'd be something to see, btw.... you are ace.

and yeah.. hang in there, urb and maxi; i'm glad there's at least a reprieve, and your heads aren't buried in the sand. (unlikely)

the competition for graphic work here is getting cutthroat already. everyone's tightening belts and budgets. new campaigns are being cancelled.

friends are undercutting each other. :(

and our economy isn't that badly affected.... .yet.

    I hear you, mate ;)

I think because I know nothing about web software, the thought is daunting to start from the beginning it!

I may decide to learn one day, in the mean time I'm channeling my skills through the print process.
  5.
i was listening to Tim Bray from Sun giving a speech to webby people on how to survive the downturn and having told the audience that a whole bunch would lose their jobs he then said it is a great opportuinity to 'skill up'. his main thust was that programmers would learn fundamentals of design and that (web) designers learn basics of simple coding.

the link above has the bullet points or you can watch the interesting talk online

round 2 of interviews taking place next month :(

thing is we aren't short of work for the people we have - instead we are struck with 6+ months of bad client debt

I think that is a similar problem to here. We are so busy. The graphics department has only 4 designers including the senior. And they are making 2 of us redundant. Ive no idea how we'll cope once the two have gone!

I agree with sock it's the media that are making this so called credit crunch and recession much worse.

Good luck to all of you, unfortunately companies will use this as an opportunity to save money only to pay the hierarchy more...

freelancers is how hospitals handle it. it's not required to save money overall, but the money allowed for each section is written in stone for the year.

they shortstaff and don't hire, then contract for a temp at 4-5 times the hourly wage of a staff nurse. best i can figure is that old "different columns" thing. each department has a budget; the pay for temps comes from a different allocation.

yeah, i know it's different, but the mindset seems the same.

tbh there are a couple of people who have been let go that the office is quite glad to have found an excuse to do so

hospitals here take that approach as well, it is a case of just putting the temp costs under a different code. Stupidity rules!

This always happens. I've interviewed designers (in the UK) that claim they were made redundant after 9/11. Seemingly the clients the company worked for had little to do with any relationship to travel etc.

SOME companies see it as a "sorting the what from the chaff" opportunity. Pretty crappy really

yeah, it is. My father told me that when he worked at Littlewoods (large UK company), they always had the one month consulting period as well. Cruel. We'd be better knowing straight away for peace of mind. I bet the managers are well aware who will be going as well!
