not to rain on your parade, but isn't it still possible that the mccain fries can still win? like it has been previously when your beloved george w. has won regardless of the people's vote?

I'm fairly sure McCain conceded, which means that he's not going to pursue it in court. I did read that he previously had a lawsuit to count late-arriving military ballots, but with such a landslide here, it's probably not worth it.

No, it was a good question - the 2000 election was dragged out for weeks in the courts. ;)
  2.
but that was because the vote was soooo tight a few votes in florida swung the election away from the popular vote and into the hands of the electoral college

its kinda complicated but also a little out of date - conceived as coping with slow transmittal of results and the posibilty the popular vote would be dominated by the bigger states (though the all or nothing status within big states still seems to make this happen)

were the electoral college to remain and instead more states were like (maine?) and proportionately slit their votes - it might make a little more sense to people not used to the system, but the system has only broke twice so may as well leave it as it is

    congrats to your president-elect.

    :)

the USians around here are mostly ecstatic. i'm looking forward to seeing the mess made by your current administration's policies begin to get cleaned up. i'm going to thoroughly enjoy watching our current government switch from Bush's rightwing security agenda to Obama's economic agenda.

the world is going to watch for real change; i think y'all can do it.

I was actually reading that Pakistan might be Bush's last act within office - as Bush Sr. attacked Somalia immediately before handing over the Presidency to Clinton (or so I read - I was too young at the time).

Luckily, you can still see the policies touted during the campaign - here's Obama's. I grabbed the technology PDF last September and plan to hold him to his word.

Beyond that, I think it's going to be very difficult not to have some people be letdown - we're talking about a massive amount of voters, all with different ideas on how to do things. Obama voted to make the Patriot Act permanent, and he voted for a very screwy FISA bill...despite that, I have hope for his overall plan.

i'm super excited as well but i don't envy the task ahead. whoever won has to clean the previous moron and his adminstration's mess. it is historic and i feel proud to have taken a part and glad that i "think" my vote counted.

now, if californians can just get with the new millennium and realize that church and state should remain separate. :depressed:

    Congratulations.
It's nice to see people are happy, and optimistic, if still a little cautious.

Full of optimism here too. I stayed up until about half 3 watching the results come in then fell asleep. Luckily, since I was at work at 8.

But really good result I think. And a definate change in my eyes. I don't think I remember a Democratic government in America, or at least not when I was old enough to care.

heh... she'd have been 9 or 10 when Bush was elected.

    ....................

i'm very unhappy to read that:

Prop 8 in CA: the people of California actually approved the gay marriage ban.

Amendment 2 in FL: Passed. yet another gay marriage ban.

Prop 102 in AZ: Passed. "only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state".

Act 1 in AS: Passed. now gay couples are unable to adopt or foster-parent children.

Amendment 46 in CO: --is neck-and-neck-- with the "yes" side slightly ahead . it would ban programs that work to eliminate the gaps between white dudes and everyone else.

    :(

Agreed. do what the republicians never did to bush.

At the same time obamas going to extend his hand across the isle so this time WILL NOT be more of the same. This is a stain the republicians are going to have a hard time cleaning up or pretending never happened. LOL

Regardless i'm happy obamas gonna make it in and there was a record turn out.

The next few years will be interesting as Obama gets stuck with the biggest mess in us history.

But at least nobody is screaming assassination. I'm sick of hearing that shit.

The point you're missing is the democrats in the House and Senate were complicit in many if not all of the decisions made over the last eight years.

Yes, it's a mess. It's a stain on both parties.

Obama's made an epic amount of promises, more than any election I remember in 20 years. We'll see.
