I figure there the majority here are mac people but never the less since ubuntu server seems popular I though I might ask this here, just in case someone has experience with that:

Can anyone point me to a good book about ubuntu Linux Server administration? I am especially interested in a simple, yet comprehensive How-To/Tutotial/Step-by-Step/For Dummies guide how to set up a smallish Network of exclusively ubuntu computers and a ubuntu server with NIS and NFS (that is with the clients having a full install of ubuntu, but the home folders of the users reside on the server with a quota etc) –

The thing is, I suggested this setup to my girlfriend (she is involved in a student organization that has a small office that runs ubuntu exclusively), and I did some research and even called in help but me and the other guy working on this built the server, cleaned up the clients etc but failed at implementing this "users have home folders on server" thing :-(

I searched the net high an low, but everything I found was slightly outdated or obviously omitted a step or a configuration that is needed, because we have the server up and running, the services on it and on the clients but login to a user on the server from a client directly (that is from boot, not from within an account via the console or ssh) still does not work as advertised.

    Sorry dude, no idea. :(

O'Reilly has a wide selection of technical books, though, and they're usually quite comprehensive. It's a start.
