The 'genre' column is back and unhideable.
In iTunes 7, a preferences setting let you disable the Genre column when using the Browser pane -- so you'd see just Artist and Album. In iTunes 8, that preference is gone. Thankfully, for those who dislike seeing Genre, the ability to disable that column still exists. Quit iTunes, launch Terminal, and enter this command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE
Relaunch iTunes, open the browser, and you'll notice the Genre column has vanished. You can reverse this by quitting iTunes and repeating the above command, but with TRUE instead of FALSE. (You can also delete the pref if you wish; see the iTunes 8 store links hint for an example of how to do that.)
    - macosxhints.com

Is it possible to remove iTunes links (arrows) on this one ?
If you'd like to disable the iTunes Store link arrows, quit iTunes, open Terminal, and run this command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE
    - macosxhints.com

Thank you! the genre column and arrows both make me a crazy person

    But - the new bug:

iTunes 8 requests info on an inserted CD from the GraceNote database. If info is found, great.

But if there's no information there, iTunes freezes and then simply quits. Happened twice on me now.

Arrgh kill the genre column, kill it, kill it!

Damn I've been getting rid of dat column since iTunes beta (probably)

I love Apple but when they leave things out that have been in previous incarnations it is really fecking annoying. Bluetooth SMS function in address book anyone?

Anyway, still no crashes or freezes (yet).

True, I just wish people could agree on the name of a genre. I have 118 different genres in iTunes since I'm to fazy to fix all the trip-hop,/trip hop, rocknroll/rock & roll etc. crap.

Um, I just control-clicked the column in iTunes. It gave me a list of all the possible columns available in list view and I deselected "Genres". No Terminal involved. Am I missing something?

puuh, I have yet to install this but... seriously - who tags every single piece they got? All I care for is artist, album, track name, track number and year, prolly add disck-number too if it's multi-disk album... I don't give a damn about genre or composer, or album art for that matter. Genre? Why to box up everything, damnit!

Sometimes I'm in the mood for a certain genre and not an artist or a certain year. So the genre column is handy for me.

Genre, artist, album, track name, track number, art, year, and disk-number are the only tags which my MP3s have. The other tags are just too much for me.

as with album art, and thus coverflow/grid view, genius also won't work for those of us with a "server" Mac sharing an iTunes library that other Macs connect to (a headless mini in my case)
This is really beginning to get annoying. I don't want my music on my laptop, as then the house is without music when I take it with me. But using iTunes' built in method of sharing music across a household disables most of the new featues :(

McKs - I'm using iTunes over a network, too. I've got a folder of music sitting on a hard drive inside a Power Mac. Turn AFP on, mount the HD on your desktop, then point iTunes to the music folder as if it were a locally-connected FireWire drive.

Listening, streaming, burning, and everything else should work fine. Well, for one computer - but still.

I've got a separate music library for the laptop, of just music I want to take with me when I travel.

(I'm oversimplifying, but I can walk you through setup if I glossed over important bits :) )

Genius is full of sh*t, it just wont let me past account verification, but just sits in there, doing nothing. I've entered billing info correctly, pressing done yields nothing, pressing "go back" the same and so does "cancel" It just sits there, doing absolutely nothing at all. What a piece of crap.

flak, thx. That's how I used to do it before iTunes had built-in sharing. The rendez-vous thing is more convenient when you have multiple Macs using the same music. And since it's a feature apple put in, I'd kinda expect it to play nice with the rest of iTunes' features.
Maybe I should go back to the afp method though.

I have (as you all prolly do) thousands of songs in my iTunes Library. I never get around to playing most of 'em again. The GENIUS PLAYLIST is GREAT! You put in ONE SONG and hit the genius button and it finds 25 (you can make it more) songs IT thinks GOES with that one. I did it 3 times and tried not to look too hard at what was selected and loaded all three genius playlists into the iPod and my walks in the city were full of happy surprises (because I had put each song IN THERE because I loved it in the first place)
    :-D Just my humble opinion!
    Cool!
