hey peeps, was wondering if anyone does their own podcasts -
what's the best way, software etc to make them so that they're fully compatible with iTunes etc?

Garageband is nice for this kind of thing, audio hijack I think is the best recorder.

How do you plan on distributing it?

Do you have an existing audience? A web presence now?

What are you going to be talking about?

it's the whole weekly podcast from our Church.
i'm setting up the website now so a link from the website to iTunes would be ideal.

we've plenty of hosting space etc.
it's just one of those vallue added extras to give a fully loaded website

There's nothing wrong with hosting the podcast from your own website, there's no specific need to be on iTunes.

    Also, read this

    Hey Bree,

That's funny, I was delivering a training session on RSS, Pod Casts and Social Networking only just today!

There are few things I could do with some answers to but in the mean time some more stuff to look at to add to Biff's (it's a good link he's given you there, so leave him be! :p )

If you're creating a static page to host your podcasts, adding them manually as they come, but would like to have an RSS/XML file so you can take advantage of iTunes as another source of delivery, then why not have a look at a little app called Feedforall. The nice thing it can help you do is make sure the tags iTunes want are in there...

Also, have you thought about Feedburner or Podomatic? You could always look to host on here and then the whole feed stuff is eased for you..?

Should you decide to use PHP or ASP to create your pod page and feed then you can do this to, you just need to make sure you end-up with a clearly and cleanly formatted XML structure at the end and that if you want iTunes to pick up on it, their additional tag format is followed - I did create an ASP RSS feed some time ago but I've no idea where the code it!?

There's more but hope that helps in giving you some more food for thought...
