Anyone know how to step and repeat in illustrator? I thought I was there with Effect->Distort & Transform->Transfom.. but I need to edit the stepped items but with transform they are just an effect, you would think it was a simple thing to do, suppose I could do it in Indesign.

Basicaly im repeating a dot to make a tile then repeating the tile, but the dots are not all the same size so need to manually edit them on the tile but to get the spacing correct I wanted to step and repeat them.

    Make sense?

    Cheers

after using distort and transform, you can expand them so they aren't an effect. but i'm sure there is a step and transform repeat, nonetheless.

yeah, just had a quick look, and i guess that is the only way to do it (using the effect). but then object > expand changes it from an effect to actual path, so it's all cool :)

    Select Object

    Shift + Command + M

    Select your step distance horizontally/vertically

    Click Copy

Then use Shift + Command + D (to repeat the transform), repeat until you have the necessary amount required.

Why? The above method is the correct way to Step and Repeat (not Step/Repeat using Distort/Transform - that's for applying transforms not fixed to just horizontal or vertical, spirals etc..). Plus it doesn't turn the object into an effect. You can then use distribute/align to solve any inconsistencies on the step transform.

Either way, they both work (one needs expand, the other doesn't).

Actually the distort/transform has worked wonders as Ive been able to repeat my tile over a 3050x1300mm area and adjust just the first tile and see it applied (very slowly) to the lot. Then I can just expand.

    Cheers

P.S. I will try meska's way once illustrator has finished saving, takes forever on this G41ghz dp :(

yeah, but using the effect allows you to do it a number of times in one go, innit.

All useful in different situations. Alt drag and duplicate like overbyte said is very useful too for a quick step/repeat.

Its things like this that make you look back and think how much quicker I could of done a job!

    cheers

    Gotta love illustrator
