i read somewhere that most people don't vote the issues, they vote the "image" they have in their head of the candidate. i can't have a huge opinion about the coming US elections. i do think that the Democratic candidate is about as far as you can lean right and still get to stay in the party.
a recent photoessay at that wonderful Boston Globe photo blog (if you haven't yet bookmarked this site.... DO IT) gave me pause, just looking at the images.
if people vote the images, the war hero's got a distinct edge over the pencil-necked geek. 23 hi-rez photos.
I think they're showing the extreme of which people are painting Obama. The New Yorker usually has some great covers. Found a nice collection here.
Dunno - I like Obama, but some don't. Happens. McCain doesn't seem so bad, I just think we can do better. I get the sense that he'd be more open to listening to reason than Bush, but for the most part wants to continue the policies already in place. Meh.
Most people do vote based on personality, because most people suck. This has turned into the same clusterfuck that runs Hollywood, except that politicians have more influence over our daily lives than Brangelina ever will.
We've got a society that is obsessed with celebrities...from movie stars to music artists. Problem is, when that extends to political leaders, you end up with charismatic and photogenic people being voted in solely for those things - and in turn, running things like the economy.
People would rather throw around words like "war hero" or "muslim" or "flip flopper" than look at the details why someone is or isn't a good candidate for the highest job in the country, the President of the United States. That's sad.
I don't think the in-joke above is any different than those who know the intimate details of what Britney Spears ate for breakfast this morning.
