In the picture you can see how the Ecofont is created by omitting parts of the letter. At the displayed size, this is obviously not very nice, but in a normal font size it is actually very usable. The results of course vary depending on your software and the quality of your computerscreen. The Ecofonts works best for OpenOffice, AppleWorks and MS Office 2007. Printing with a laser printer will give the best printing results.

    ecofont

they say that ecofont can reduce ink useage by about 20%.

i checked it out; it prints and looks fine using an inkjet printer.

    this one's not bad.

SMeltery has a bunch of ho-hum free fonts, but

Megalopolis-extra is not only fairly pleasing to my eye, it also has many many "specialty" glyphs.

check out the pdf and see what's there.

if you like it, download Megalopolis-extra_OT font.

    Flaminia type system

    Flaminia
is a 2008 opensource project started as a Master Degree Thesis by Andrea Bergamini, an Italian graphic designer annoyed by the chaotic and poorly designed road signage system in his country.

a free font i'm fond of, Anonymous, is now updated.

    Anonymous Pro

Anonymous Pro differs from Anonymous™ and Anonymous 9 in a few key characters. While the earlier fonts had a one-story lowercase “a” like Monaco, Anonymous Pro features a two-story lowercase “a” to help distinguish it from the “o”. In the earlier fonts, the slashed zero, designed to look different than the capital “O”, goes the “wrong” way compared to most fonts that have this feature.

ha! nicko, you don't do scripting, i am guessing? Anonymous is, for me, more readable, more easily fast-scanned than Monaco. (no, do not blame the poor font for my html and js bloopers. i can get there while still reading legibly.)

    Lafemi, nice tip! thanks :)

    whole lotta glyphs

The goal for this product was to provide a single Unicode-based font family that would contain a comprehensive inventory of glyphs needed for almost any Roman- or Cyrillic-based writing system, whether used for phonetic or orthographic needs. In addition, there is provision for other characters and symbols useful to linguists. This font makes use of state-of-the-art font technologies to support complex typographic issues, such as the need to position arbitrary combinations of base glyphs and diacritics optimally.

Doulos is very similar to Times/Times New Roman, but only has a single face - regular. It is intended for use alongside other Times-like fonts where a range of styles (italic, bold) are not needed.

vbf = vector base font. i guess it will need to be converted before use as a font.
  4.
from what i could find, it may not just be a vector based font, but an open type variant. at any rate what kind of conversion are we talking about?

well, i'm pretty sure that it's going to be a fontstudio pro output file, master file type thing. once opened in fontstudio pro *cough*, you'd just hit 'generate font', and make a truetype, or whatever font from it.
