i want bedtime stories, please. it's not fair for you to just turn out the lights and leave, imo.

I got to ride the rails once. It would be more vagabondish to have hopped a freight for parts unknown; my ride was a tad more conventional.

Living in NE Nevada, right on the Utah line, you find abandoned mines nearly everywhere there's a hump in the ground. Most are defunct and downright dangerous. Most, however, still have narrow-gauge rail lines in various stages of repair leading up to them.

I met these cowboys without cows or horses, who spent their time doing hourly work for the forest service and using the USFS heavy equipment to make what was essentially a twisted rusted playground, with a really steep "rollercoaster" made of old rails and supports.

They gutted an old '53 Chevy for everything but the motor and drive train, removed the tires, and made a launching platform on the top of a slag heap of dust and debris.

You get in (bring your own cushion if you're a weaking..like me), kneel and lean out the window frames, and with the motor on and the choke pulled out just a tad, you slowly roooooool up an steep incline. There's a moment at the top when the motor is shut off, of an almost demure balance, and then .. thud.. whoooosh......... at a 35 degree slope, 45 mph/70 kph seems like double that. If you timed everything just right, at the end, the Chevy would roll right up a ramp onto the back of a flatbed truck, ready to go back in the chute for another spree.

This was something you did alone.

It was ... :) very fine.

    g'night.

    FAIL

I was in the land of nod on the sofa just before I posted last.

The small boy that has brightened our lives for the last 6 months with his smiles required his last feed of baby milk for the day. So, up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire we headed.

On completion of the feeding / burping regime (him, not me), I found I could not sleep. The house is quiet now, all I hear is the ticking of the kitchen clock and the clicking of my fingers on the keyboard. It's hard to think that in less than 7 hours time the house will be filled with the hubbub of children's noises.

    I'll try again. Nytol

MAN am I a fan of mick and nicko!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

these two should be short story writers.

It's evening here ,very quiet in my apartment with ambient sounds of the huge city outside. These are sounds I don't hear anymore myself. For once I don't wish to have the currently favored televised offerings along with the currently favored commercials as noisemakers in here. So to my book I go...

I have many many many books. Tonight I *run kites with Amir and Hassan, the Sultans of Kabul*.

Blueshead tucks Mick in..Pulls out an old book of Poetry.. Whispers in her ear..

    "A Smile to Remember

we had goldfish and they circled around and around
in the bowl on the table near the heavy drapes
    covering the picture window and
my mother, always smiling, wanting us all
to be happy, told me, "be happy Henry!"
and she was right: it's better to be happy if you
    can
but my father continued to beat her and me several times a week while
raging inside his 6-foot-two frame because he couldn't
understand what was attacking him from within.

    my mother, poor fish,
wanting to be happy, beaten two or three times a
week, telling me to be happy: "Henry, smile!
    why don't you ever smile?"

and then she would smile, to show me how, and it was the
    saddest smile I ever saw

one day the goldfish died, all five of them,
they floated on the water, on their sides, their
    eyes still open,
and when my father got home he threw them to the cat
there on the kitchen floor and we watched as my mother
    smiled

    Charles Bukoski"

you told that last time i asked for a story. :P

Several + years ago, blueshead had a server. we gathered there to chat and listen to his fine music collection. one night we were talking and i quoted, in passing, a line from my favorite Bukowski poem at the time "we're all like pigs slapped down some lane, our grassbrains singing toward the blade." he knew the poem. that was awesome to find out that blues' was a rabid bukowski fan.

i met charles bukowski a long time ago. he and greg corso and gary snyder were at a poetry festival; corso brought his kid. :) i babysat in a gallery above the stage and got to hear and see everything up close. it was great. bukowski was an ass. ;) a horrible foul-smelling rude crude ass. that made no difference at all to me when it came to the raw truth in his poems. he quit drinking a couple of years before he died, as i recall. he wrote nothing worth reading during those sober years, but he wanted more time on the planet. that's worth knowing, i think. life was precious to him, whether he "enjoyed it" or not.

    so ugly he was beautiful.

    thanks, blues' :)

    g'night

    It's almost quiet now.

The airport curfew has silenced the sky and the service station next door has been empty for a while. My little man has been peacefully sleeping for a few hours and I've bid my girl an anti-valentine and good night.

Time to do the same for all the fazyluckers.

    i guess i do, nicko.

an aquaintance (Gary) was in Austrailia (Arnhem Land) doing some research, when one of the elders at the community he was stationed at asked him a favour. the elder had noticed that he had a video camera with him, and asked him if he would film a circumcision ceremony that was being held, so it could be made into a DVD and kept at the local school so kids in the future could understand how the ceremony was conducted. in order to be able to watch the ceremony he had to be initiated, which (if I remember correctly) the elders took care of in a pretty basic way.

the ceremony lasted for nights. they had a didgeridoo set up, being played into a big plastic drum so it was amplified. the young boy who was going to be circumcised (early teens, Gary said) was fully painted in clay and ochre. there was a group of three late teen boys who were dancing every night - 4 hours at a stretch each night, dancing the animals of the area and the Dreaming Stories.
when he was finished up and leaving the community, Gary saw those same three teenage boys - in Snoop Dogg and Wu Tang Clan t-shirt at the school's basketball court.

    The Dreaming is still alive.

    'night.
