“You probably spend hours a day staring at this screen — working, playing, talking to friends, shopping. With so many creative people spending so much time on their computers it is no surprise that the computer interface itself has become source material for contemporary art. Daily immersion in a two-dimensional space has raised an intriguing question that many contemporary artists can’t resist: what is the physicality of the screen? The ubiquitous interface experience has created a symbiosis between the metaphorical space of the computer and the physical world.

““Wallpaper,” by Lachlan Blackley (Laurence King, $40), is a delirious catalog of work by mostly European artists and designers showing how the ornamental and the decorative play nicely as art. A two-year-old Swedish design collective, made one of the best examples, a photosensitive paper that is white until the sun hits it and then its pattern, a repeat of a still life of iconic Nordic design objects — a vase, a lamp, a mug — develops. Even better is “Rat Wallpaper,” which was actually made by gerbils, who gnawed through rolls of white paper, making a lacy pattern (the holes let a previous paper show through). “They were fantastic,” said Katja Savstrom, one of Front’s four designers. “They are really hard workers.” Sadly, both papers are still in prototype only. Using simple mechanical hinges and pistons, this inventive staircase easily folds flush up against a wall to expand a lower space and/or to restrict access to an upper floor. The mechanics within the design allow any person to easily open or close the staircase from upstairs or downstairs. Inner pistons help slide the stairs back up swiftly to create a flush wall. The pistons also act as a gradient to lower each step individually after the stairs have been pulled out, creating a gradual, elegant wave-like pattern as the steps individually lock into place.

This stair by Scottish architects, McInnes Gardner and Partners is very elegant. Each stair is supported only on one side, cantilevering out of the solid wall, which forms one ballustrade. The other is a single rectangular sheet of glass, floor to ceiling, creating a brilliantly minimalist stair that appears to float in air.

Designed by Moritz Waldemeyer, it’s part of MoMA’s Design & the Elastic Mind Exhibit. A Corian table embedded with 2400 LED lights and 2 trackpads turns it into a modern version of the 1972 Atari Pong game. Pushing the technology a bit further, he also crafted a LED-based roulette table, which sports an electroluminescent map and an overhead lamp that work in conjunction to provide the rolling ball action casino dwellers know and love.

Constant Garden Speakers: Make Your Desk Look Like Shrek Crop Field

A design team at Umea Design School created Constant Garden to act as a desktop speaker that gently plays gardeny sounds ("Oh— would you look at those weeds?!") and act as an audio secretary, prompting you about appointments. It's designed in rubber, and each of those Shrek-ear-like fronds holds a mini speaker that also lights up with LED magic. Apparently it's an attempt to "coordinate audio visual mechanics and integrate them more seamlessly into our daily lives," but, whatever— I reckon it'd look sweet on my desk, pouring out tunes as I work. Shame it's just a concept.

Providence created by Matthias Pliessnig is a bench entirely made of steam-bent White Oak. Matthias wanted to make a form which creates a physical conversation between the people using it and the form itself.

Designed by D-Vision Bubblicious is a fruit bowl comprised of varying volumes of spheres. It allows you to place fruits of different sizes, in a way that enables to position the object in a new equilibrium each time, due to the change in the center of gravity.

Interwoven threads drowned in resin that recalls the texture of baskets. The effect is an interplay of full and empty spaces, interwoven light and material, distributed differently according to the use of the lamp, which evokes the warm touch of fabric, creating an extremely suggestive visual and tactile effect.
