Why does the complete transport infrastructure break down after a little snow that they knew was coming? London is at a standstill this morning...

It comes to a standstill because it only snows a few times a year, and its not practical to invest millions in equipment to deal with this kind of weather, plus people just become pathetic and forget how to drive and walk which doesn't help!!!

It's beacuse most of the poulation of our fair country seem to have little or no common sense.

It took me twice as long as usual to get to work this morning in Guildford. It was snowing, but the roads were only wet, and people were doddering around in their cars like they were driving on sheet ice.

One little bit of adverse weather and they are all running around in a panic.

    Muppets....

Don't feel bad, they closed school here for the kiddies yesterday with 1.5" of snow. That's just sad.

They close the schools here when it snows to save money on the heating bill and reduce health and safety claims :D

I have hard time believing that anything could come to halt because of snow. We here get crazy amounts of snow but everything keeps on going as normal. (except the trains).

oh i don't work for the people who deal with local or national roads, that's just a personal viewpoint. Although i can't see why deicers on trains can't be used to run proper services, i thought running frequent trains using deicers on all trains would result in safer rails rather than what the industry has done today?

...which is fuck all. Metronet are POOR. We should have never transferred the Tube/Train assets to third party companies.

they close schools because some staff cannot get to work due to transport issues, and by law, there has to be a certain number of staff in the schools for health and safety.

let's not talk about Metronet, that whole debacle is just unbelievable. A company having a 30 year contract which requires government legislation to undo is a joke, metronet paying themselves to do the work but not having any performance requirements or penalties in place is a bigger joke, and metronet seeking additional funding to cover 'unforeseen' expenses is well an even bigger bigger joke!

The fact of the matter is most PFI contracts are a waste of public money, it's a nice way of increasing costs for the future whilst trying to minimise costs now, and yes this is one of the many reasons why at present the UK has a expanding economy, oh and the fact that we keep on building on everything when population levels aren't increasing as fast as in the past (taking away migration).

    rant over for now.

everyone understands anti-welsh, why don't you think Labour didn't come into power before blair? ;)

Personally I would like to see four elected parliaments in each country, with one overarching president. Oh and that person being directly elected by the people, not the choice of particular parties :D

From the other side of the pond, significant snow event forecast for Monday nite- Wednesday. If 1 inch of snow cripples local schools, what will 8+ with ice do?
