I got a nice shiny 3ghz quad beast of a machine mac pro sittin next to a grimey 17" crt (although top picture quality) and me thinks it might be a waste... I'm after a nice 20+ inch flat screen display although anything higher would of course be nice... any recommendations? The 30" apple one is sweet as, but at over a grand, a little extravagant...

    TIA

how about the dell 20" / 24"? you'd get a hell of a deal in america, but r-o britain is another matter. then again, cheaper than apple.

you could quite easily go cheaper again though - but if you are doing print work, you'll need to watch what you go for :)

Anyone know which company makes the actual lcd panels, the good ones, so i know what kind of things to look for...ie if they have an own brand etc...

It used to be Mitsubishi for the CRTS, i think it's either Sharp or Hitachi that make the panels.

I would go for the 20" Apple screen. It's pretty damn nice and affordable too nowadays. If you really want the business, and you have the moolah, go for the Eizo Flat Panel - essential for high end colour work etc...

That Eizo panel's specs look pretty darn good, shame its got the aesthetics of a 60's block of flats...

We have 24" dell's at work and they are godawful for paint! The centers of the screens have completely different contrast & colour than the edges!!

since this thread semi started up again...lol...I might as well add some info about what the display would be used for : most of the time graphics in photoshop for printing, a little web work, and a lot of video...

Anyone with good experiences please shout em out...bad ones just as good too...avoid dell is the message so far ;)

    cheers

Hey Jamm, I've been on the hunt for a new screen as well... I keep coming back to the 20in Apple.

We used 23in Apples at my old work (all print for Paramount and Fox Home Ent.) and they were pretty darn good. I would have to get color proofs of a few of my jobs and they always came back looking rather accurate.

I wanted to get a "Huey" to see how much more I could tweek the display, but my boss would never go for it. Instead she wanted to know why I sucked and couldn't color calibrate the monitor 100% accurate by just eyeballing it.

lol, you can't eyeball it? ;) I have to say i'm tempted to go for the 23" apple one over the 20" cause of the better resolution - Full HD capable etc...could be useful in the long run (the display i have at the moment is great, quite a few years old, but good as new...if only it were 23" and flat...
Came across a Samsung one as well...seems ok, but dunno...would need to use it for a little i reckon to test it out...

I think i'm gonna have to keep looking...

go with a samsung. i've got the apple 23" and it is total sweetness, but at a price. if I knew better at the time i would've gone samsung. they are a great price for the quality, and possibly better, definitely as good as, the apples. samsung has huge amounts of money in R&D so they put out the best products out there. go with them for a t.v., too, if you're in the market. also, if you do a lot of video, i think the samsungs have quicker refresh rates and higher contrast ratios in general, both are berry berry important when working in anything other than static or print work.

Hey good, do you have any specific Samsungs you would recommend?

I found this one... has the same specs (more or less) as the apple 20" and even has a higher contrast rating...

    206BW

Too bad it's not out yet? When is it going to come out, I can't find out?

Edit: i'm assuming sometime this month? It's looking like I'm going to grab the 206BW over the Apple... Esp with a price tag under 300.00, that's something I can afford.

The 226BW from samsung looks sweet as well, also came across some NEC ones, they seem alright, and not too expensive either...and also when comparing features to the Eizo ones, the eizo's aren't actually that expensive... Only been checkin Jigsaw for prices just to give me an idea...damn i hate the uk costing so much...

Well if you want to get ripped of Jigsaw would be the place to get your product. Try somewhere like ebuyer, and do the usual search froogle etc for your product.

UK is more expensive than the states, thats due to currency valuations and because americans are greedy :D (so they rip us off e.g. mac ;) )

Just got a quote on the new Eizo 24" (S2411W-Black) monitor from Jigsaw - £775 inc vat + del. doesn't arrive in uk for another couple of weeks though...

And as Jigsaw is expensive, it must be around for cheaper than that...somewhere...

I just got the 206BW echoes mentioned, and it seems pretty good. Like most cheap LCDs it is a bit too sharp and also the gloss black surround is slightly distracting (should be matt). But more natural looking than my old mans Dell and my old man-in-laws Formac, probably cos it has 1650 pixels not 1280. Dunno if I'd want 1650 px on a 22" like the 226BW. My aging Lacie next to it looks a bit dim now...

BUY NOW IT IS THE BEST EVAR 5 stars innit.

I just got the 206BW for $280 (with rebate) and I must say I do love this monitor. It makes my 3.75 yr old powerbook look like someone pissed all over the screen. I dont mind the gloss as my apartment doesnt have much to reflect off of it. But I guess they are trying to make it look even nicer than it needs to be. I could just take it apart and hit it with some 1600 wet grit. lol.

    I also give the 206BW 5 starrs.
