I had a post on base in the Font Exp thread.

Basically it caused me a lot of hassle. The main problem was it didn't play with Quark 6.0, which I am still saddled with for a few jobs.

In the end I'm back to Suitcase and hating it too… also have a number of fonts that didn't survive the move from Suitcase to Font Ex and back. Beware, copy you old fonts folder before letting Font Ex take over.
  1.
I still can not figure out why you all hate Suitcase. I had more problems with Font Explorer than I ever have with Suitcase. I manage the fonts for 7 designers and Suitcase has been the best, i can't wait til we get our new machines and get SCFusion.

LFM personally I found Suitcase to be a resource hog. FontExplorer is light and free while having all of the same features that suitcase fusion has. Also, have I mentioned it's free?

Suitcase was cancer for my Mac. Whenever I activated a font in Suitcase I had to quit and restart Photoshop for the new font(s) to be active in PS. With FontExplorer things just work.

i have found that most "font management problems" come down to corrupt fonts, rather than a particular management application. having said that, fontexplorer rocks!

I guess I'm a little curious about all this too. WHile arial, times, and impact are weak sauce, do you really need 6k fonts at your disposal at all times?
  3.
given it's free, i use it at home and it's okay.

at work though, i had big problems with it as I did with font agent pro.

Suitcase has worked the best for us. and perhaps like MTG, it has to do with Quark. though we are moving to InDesign before June.

echoes, what version of suitcase were you using in correlation with CS2??

I also spent the better part of any down time at work over the course of a few months, creating new suitcases for a batch of about 2000 fonts since the foundry that had put them out quite a few years ago didn't name them well, so families were not being grouped together - in ANY font app. It was a very tedious task. I did this with font doctor.

I also like the feature in suitcase where I can assign keywords to fonts and then do a search just for those keywords.

I read an article a while back (i'll look for it and link it, thought I was sure it was in print) making the argument that a true designer should only need ten fonts to use in design, with the exclusion of specialty fonts for specialty work (ie: custom stuff). The idea would have been that the ten would vary from designer to designer, but what do you guys think?

Oh my god... I cannot tell you the number of different fonts I used. I guess thats because I hit so many different styles. If I was doing only minimal stuff then yah, there would be only 10 or so fonts.

At my old job, each property had its own set of fonts you had to use, and then there were groups of fonts you could use for each style of property. So I think I would use about 50 different fonts a day. Plus my old boss would get pissed off if we used the same font too many times, so we had to research and find new fonts all the time.

Biff, when I make a logo, I try to alter the typeface as much as possible. I just use fonts as a starting point and then tweek from there. It's rare that I will use use a typeface and thats it. Otherwise its got a pretty goood chance of looking like someone elses pre-existing "font" logo.

oh man, our CEO (of a large international company) sends out company-wide emails in Comic Sans, even her signature is in Comic Sans. It's just so ironic - they institute a dress code so that we all project a more professional image, and then her emails are in Comic Sans.

You should send her an email as an "intervention" and tell her she is tarnishing the image of the corporation, and as a result, you'll be wearing clown shoes to work till she gets it sorted out.

sometimes it's like echoes says use the font as a starting point and add too it, otherwise it will be mainly vector work with a couple of characters or a speciality font usage

biff - i don't know about the rest, but i know we end up with so many fonts (not to mention applications that have to be available, and some knowledge of how to use them) because of the documents i get from clients; as far as altering typeface for logos, as long as a client can supply files, no problem. unfortunately, this is not always the case. also, print runs that are not exact reruns need to be altered; so if a doc has been converted to outlines, have to have the font.....

i don't think i've used more than twenty or so in designs or document prep, but as prevailing design styles and/or client demands change, more are added....

free, combined with how well it works, is very good. also will agree that most font problems are from corrupt or incomplete fonts (missing screen fonts, etc)

Until Feb. 28, 2009, FontExplorer X Pro 2.0 is available at a significant discount:
Purchase a license for only EUR 39 incl. VAT, and save EUR 40!

I checked out the trial version of version 2.0 and there isn't that much of a difference to 1.2.3... which is free and still available here for downloading:

i'm kinda hoping that the coming (not released yet) FontApp (is that the right name?) will be awesome.

i won't upgrade FontExplorer, and it will wither away. changing font management software is daunting, and i don't have that many fonts.
